Art

NEW! The Public Art Endowment enriches Greensboro's cultural life by funding public works of art. By doing so, it helps us "brand" Greensboro as a unique and vibrant community. A major initiative is now underway to build an initial $2 million endowment. And by 2011 we hope to launch a broad range of programming—from the purchase of significant new art for public spaces to public exhibitions of private collections.

UPDATE! The Public Art Endowment launched a community initiative recently at the home of Richard and Jane Levy of Greensboro. Using the Levy art collection as a springboard, Foundation President Walker Sanders spoke of the importance of art in public spaces as a way of bringing people together.

Lauren and David Worth, the initiative's leaders, shared their personal involvement in the arts and explained how a permanent source of funding for art in public spaces is important to enhancing the community.

The Community Foundation and its Support of the Arts

The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro helps anyone who wants to make a significant impact – for life – on the causes in Greensboro they are passionate about. The Foundation manages donations to local, regional and national organizations and causes. As a trusted leader, the Foundation brings people together to address issues and needs that are important to our local community. Because we do this, we are able to recognize the current and emerging needs and issues that need your support.

It is in this regard that The Community Foundation supports the arts. We believe the arts are a natural extension of our mission – to build and strengthen our community. Art connects people, artists and viewers, one to the other. At the same time, it bears witness to and expands our experience of our community.

To this end we offer an alternating series of exhibitions. Community Collects invites the greater community to experience selected works from significant private collections in and around Greensboro. Community Documents showcases and shares the experiences of individual community members through photography and other media.

These exhibitions help diverse constituents from across the community experience The Community Foundation and learn of the many ways to become more engaged.

In line with our commitment to build endowments benefiting the community, these exhibitions also help promote interest our Public Art Endowment – a permanent resource for art outside the Foundation’s walls. The Public Art Endowment is a permanent fund for highly original works of public art.

The Foundation is passionate about bringing people together, but we do so motivated by a very old notion: humans like to make things and to be in groups. In a sense it doesn’t get any simpler – or more profound – than that. That said, we hope you enjoy these exhibitions, meet new friends, enjoy new experiences and leave The Community Foundation with a revived sense of what is possible and an extended understanding of the community around you.
