The Community Foundation's Teen Grantmaking Council awards more than $13,000 in grants to area organizations

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Teen Grantmaking Council has announced its grant awards for 2009.

The council provides an opportunity for high school age youth across greater Greensboro to gain leadership experience, meet area youth, voice opinions and make a difference by making grants to youth-directed projects that address community issues. The Teen Grantmaking Council is designed to train young leaders to make decisions about which youth projects in the community will receive money.

The Teen Grantmaking Council is a partnership between The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, N.C. Gives and Leading to Change, Inc.

The 2009 grants were announced at a recent celebration by the council at the Carolina Theatre. Those receiving a grant are:

  • New Jerusalem Cathedral’s youth group, BLAZE,  $1,280, for organizing a demonstration to raise awareness of the homeless population in Guilford County;
  • Early College at Guilford Robotics Club, $1,840, to spread science and technology throughout the county via science presentations;
  • Girls, Inc. of Guilford County, $1,320, for a program that involves people expressing how they feel and what they think about their lives;
  • Greensboro Youth Council, $2,000, for the collection of new and gently used prom dresses and accessories to give to underprivileged young women for their proms;
  • Grimsley High School Sierra Club, $2,000, to conduct a professional energy audit of Grimsley;
  • Page High School Environmental Club, $1,745, to establish a self-perpetuating recycling program;
  • Page Playmakers, $1,000, to explore and learn about how extraordinary people can rise above handicaps and triumph in life; and
  • Joseph’s House, $2,000, to provide emergency housing for one teen-ager for a month

"These young people are an inspiration through their involvement with the Teen Grantmaking Council and making a tremendous difference for the people in our community," said H. Walker Sanders, president of The Community Foundation. "We are all very proud of their accomplishments and appreciate their dedication and contributions to making Greensboro an even better place for so many."
