GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro Grasshoppers baseball team has pledged up to $50,000 in matching funds to become this year’s challenge sponsor of the Future Fund.
“The Greensboro Grasshoppers’ gift is so important because it allows us to give to our permanent endowment,” said Corey Pitz, philanthropic services officer at The Community Foundation, which established the Future Fund. “In turn, the Future Fund is able to make gifts to the community – through grants – that we otherwise could not.”
Each member of the Future Fund is crucial because their membership dollars are matched. The more members the organization has, the more it can give back to the community through grants.
The Grasshoppers have agreed to provide Future Fund up to $50,000, matching money the organization itself raises in membership dollars. Each member pays $125 to join. This year, the Future Fund’s grant theme supports Educational Programs for Children and Youth.
The Future Fund is a fresh approach to philanthropy. Its members are a group of young leaders from the Greensboro area who are committed to making our community a better place and improving the quality of life for all of our citizens. Future Fund members have this impact on their community by contributing to a permanent endowment that makes grants to build a better Greensboro.
“We are excited to partner with the Future Fund this year as their matching grants sponsor,” said Donald Moore, president and general manager of the Greensboro Grasshoppers. “They do many great things in the community, and we hope that our participation helps assist many worthwhile causes in 2010.”
Previous challenge sponsors have included individuals as well as business, such as Mary Gay and Don Brady, Kathryn and Bobby Long / Long Miller & Associates, Lynn and Mike Haley, Chrysler Classic of Greensboro, The Wyndham Championship, Greensboro Jaycees and Lomax Properties.

More about Future Fund
The Future Fund was started in 1999 by The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro. Ann Lineweaver, then chair of the Foundation’s board of directors, suggested the concept of the Future Fund to educate a younger audience about philanthropy and engage young leaders. She approached Louise and Jim Brady, local young professional leaders, to chair the Future Fund, and they recruited 264 people to join them in their first year. The Future Fund continued to grow, with an average of 300 members a year and a mention in Time magazine. To date, the Future Fund has distributed $340,000 in grants. Currently, the group is made up of 250 members. The Future Fund continues to be an initiative of The Community Foundation, which holds its Ann Lineweaver Future Fund Endowment.
