Scholarship administered by The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro names Northern Guilford High School student its 2010

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Robert Reid Drake, 2010 graduate of Northern Guilford High School, has received the John Carlton Myatt Writing Scholarship.

Drake, right, the son of Todd and Robin Drake of Summerfield, will attend UNC-Asheville in the fall and will pursue a major in Creative Writing. At Northern Guilford, Robert was founder and president of both the school’s Gay/Straight Alliance and the Student Initiating Peace Club. His awards include publication in the UNCG’s literary journal The Coraddi of his poem Travelin’ Song, voted No. 1 in the Song Lyrics category on Teen Ink’s Web page; Honorable Mention for his story Deer at the Phoenix Literary Festival; and placing as a finalist in the school’s Poet Laureate contest.

The $3,100 Myatt scholarship is given to a Guilford County High School senior who displays a creative, innovative and courageous spirit in writing and exhibits those skills through school and community activities to effect change.

The John Carlton Myatt Writing Scholarship was established in memory of John Myatt, a 1988 Grimsley graduate, who died in a June 1990 swimming accident. The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro administers the scholarship, and tax-exempt donations may be made to the Foundation at 330 S. Greene St., Suite 100, Greensboro, N.C., 27401.
