THE ART SELECTION PROCESS
The Public Art Endowment is governed by its Trustees, who make all final decisions regarding art and project selections. Trustees are supported in their work by the Art Selection Committee. This committee is composed of arts professionals from across the country and headed by Nancy Doll, director of the Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Each year the committee recommends three works for consideration. Equal consideration is given to the exhibit location of these works. Trustees are then charged with making the final selection through votes cast at their annual meeting each May.
During the initial phase of the Endowment, installations will be long-term but temporary. Once the Endowment reaches $2 million in pledged funds, works will be commissioned and/or purchased for permanent installation.
In September 2011, the Endowment unveiled its most recent installation, Standing Vase with Five Flowers by James Surls. This piece is located in the median of Green Valley Road, at the entrance to the Proximity Hotel.
Entrance to a Garden by Dennis Oppenheim is currently on view on the front lawn of VF Jeanswear, Wrangler Building, 400 S. Elm St. in Greensboro. Other artists who have agreed to lend work for consideration are Chakaia Booker, Tony Tasset and David Ellis.
In 2009, the gift of a work by Billy Lee called Guardian II was made possible by the generosity of Trustees Jane and Richard Levy. It is permanently sited at the corner of Eugene and Market streets in downtown Greensboro and now belongs to the people of Guilford County.
