As committed members of the community you may already be aware of the recently launched Public Art Endowment. You may not know that it is led and governed by folks like you who have decided this is of critical importance to Greensboro’s revitalization.
What is the Public Art Endowment? It is a permanent fund dedicated to the installation and exhibition of significant works of public art to be enjoyed by the whole community—and it is dedicated to our future as a vibrant community. The Endowment not only increases our cultural vitality for those of us lucky enough to live in Greensboro, it also enhances our desirability to those outside of the area as a community worthy of investment.
Who selects the art and how is quality guarded? The Endowment is governed by its Trustees and it is the Trustees who make all final decisions regarding art and project selections. Trustees are supported in their work by the Art Selection Committee. This committee is composed of arts professionals from across the country and headed by Weatherspoon Museum of Art Director Nancy Doll. Each year the committee recommends three works for consideration. Trustees are then charged with making the final selection through votes cast at the May annual meeting.
How does one become a Trustee? All trustees are trustees for life. Trustees choose to make a commitment at one of two stewardship levels:
- A Full Trustee makes a commitment of $25,000 over five years.
- Or an individual may become a member of a Trustee Group. Trustee Groups provide the same level of support for the Endowment, but the financial commitment is shared. For the typical group of five individuals or couples this $1,000 a year for five years.
The Endowment has already received significant support. Many of your neighbors have already made Trustee level commitments putting the Endowment well on its way to its $2 million goal within five years.
