Teaching Adults to Read: The Foil Fund for Adult Literacy

Joe Foil was a brilliant, entrepreneurial businessman, and his wife Rosa was a public school teacher. Both understood the crippling impact of illiteracy and wanted to make a difference. In 1996 they established a fund at the Community Foundation to support charitable organizations involved in teaching adults to read.

“The Foils received great joy from knowing that their financial success would help other people for many years to come," says Carol Bruce, a friend of the Foils.

The Foil Fund supports four adult literacy programs:

  • One-to-One Tutoring through Reading Connections
  • English as a Second Language Classes at First Presbyterian Church
  • A Book Lending Program at Guilford Technical Community College
  • The One City, One Book initiative of the Greensboro Public Library Foundation
