A hallmark of Women to Women is that our donors select our grant recipients.
Women to Women was created with five focus areas for grantmaking, all as they relate to women and their families in the greater Greensboro area: education, social services, the environment, health and the arts.
Working together with the staff of The Community Foundation, the Women to Women Advisory Council gathered in fall 2009 to discuss and select the first grant theme. The Advisory Council weighed options within each and ultimately selected "human services to impact women and families." Successful grant awards should make a meaningful difference in the funded project, program or organization’s ability to do its work and accomplish its goals – and the outcome should create a positive impact and improvement in the lives of our area’s women and families.
This past spring, nonprofits across our community were invited to submit letters of intent describing what they would do with a $25,000 grant – and how women and families would be impacted. The Advisory Council reviewed all of the letters and selected five from which to request a full proposal.
Full proposals were received in late summer 2010, and the Women to Women Advisory Council convened in early September. Each proposal was discussed in detail. Based on the impact of the grant on the organization, the impact the grant would have on our local women and families, and the ability of the grant to fill a gap of unmet needs, The Sherri Denese Jackson Foundation for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, Inc., was selected as Women to Women's first grantee.
Women to Women’s $25,000 grant will provide for:
- weekly workshops for women currently experiencing violence
- weekly support groups for survivors
- and monthly domestic violence volunteer advocate trainings.
This organization has a small budget – so to be able to have an additional $25,000 as our inaugural grantee is a major impact on their ability to extend critical services to women in need.
What They're Saying
“We have many wonderful non profit organizations helping women and children in Greensboro. We want to be able to provide them with large grants that will allow them to dream of ways to fix or solve the problems they see.”—Louise Brady, Founding Co-Chair
